RED4SUS
Application Manual

Do you want to be involved and work with new methods to develop new services and solutions for society with a view to a sustainable future? Then you can use this manual and its toolkit. In the journey towards a sustainable future, we may need to work with new solutions. Solutions from the last century are not sufficient for today challenges. We must develop our ability to think in new directions. How do we do this? It is difficult to develop solutions outside the traditional ways of thinking. Below, we describe a three-step method as a guide for working with radical societal change. We describe a method in three steps that creates innovation capacity and the ability to implement new solutions.

Start by looking at PREPARATION and how to put together a good work team to work with the needed changes. Then move on to the next step; to work out and design SOLUTION PROPOSALS  and how these can be concretized in prototypes. Prototypes that are then tested and developed in iterative loops. Finally, one can then think about how to implement the prototype, i.e., how to go from a generated prototype to really change a process, organization or society by implementing this prototype. Read more about this step under the heading IMPLEMENTATION.

These three steps can be carried out during some few days, or form the backbone of a development process that runs over several months. Regardless of how long the change work takes, these three steps form a good basis for a successful societal change. This handbook has been designed by the staff at UFRGS and Uppsala University to guide and inspire on the journey to develop sustainable innovation for public service.

The levelling of concepts is a fundamental factor for understanding the issues covered in the Manual and Toolkit. They form the basis for the procedures and methods presented in the Manual and Toolkit. For this reason, in this introductory section, we present the key concepts that support the proposition of the model. These concepts involve Innovation, Sustainable Innovation, Innovation in Public Service, Design and Innovation in Public Service, and Design and Sustainable Communities.

This section presents the practical procedures that can be used in selecting promising projects and building teams. The use of agile project assumptions is also discussed, an approach that, applied together with the Red4Sus proposition, can significantly contribute to its development.

This section presents the Red4Sus approach to incorporate innovation and sustainability into the projects selected in the previous stage. This implies understanding the problem from a broader perspective (empathy), followed by definition, ideation, prototyping and refinement of the designed solution.

This section discusses the steps that follow the design of the solution and that actually constitute the effective implementation of the solution. Thus, topics related to implementation planning, actual implementation and monitoring of results after implementation are addressed, including any corrections that may be necessary.
